Well, it’s happened again. YouTube recently announced some substantial changes to their monetization policies that will take effect soon. Here’s a brief rundown of the changes, how this could affect you, and some ideas for moving forward with your heads up.
YouTube changed the requirements that need to be met in order to monetize on the platform. If you remember, they made a change to the requirements back in April 2017 that allowed only channels with over 10K lifetime views to monetize. Well, due to continuing issues involving people taking advantage of the algorithms, abusing the platform, etc., YouTube has made another change.
Here are the new requirements for monetizing on YouTube:
- You must have 4,000 hours of watchtime over the last 12 months – that’s 240,000 minutes (you can check your standing in your Analytics)
- You must have at least 1,000 subscribers on your channel
- Both of the above thresholds must be met
- These changes will take affect on February 20th, 2018 and will affect ALL channels
What does this mean for you?
The issues mentioned above compelled YouTube to analyze new data and have conversations with creators. Ultimately, YouTube concluded that the new requirements were necessary in order to improve their “ability to identify creators who contribute positively to the community and help drive more ad revenue to them (and away from bad actors).”
On February 20th, if your channel does not meet these new requirements, it will no longer be able to monetize on YouTube. This applies to all creators, whether you’re partnered with a network like Fullscreen or not. However, once your channel hits those milestones, it will be re-evaluated by YouTube for monetization.
It’s worth noting that although this may seem like a crushing blow from YouTube, 90% of the affected channels were earning less than $2.50 per month. So, in many cases this lack of earnings will not make or break your bank account.
Any channels currently partnered with Fullscreen that lose the ability to monetize will still have access to parts of the Creator Platform, including tools like our multi-platform uploader; however, you will no longer have the ability to generate revenue, and your agreement with Fullscreen will be terminated as a result. Affected channels will also be paid, in accordance with the payment terms set forth in Fullscreen’s agreements with creators, any balances outstanding as of February 20th, as long as a PayPal account is linked and tax forms are filled out.
We understand that this information might be discouraging to a lot of our new and smaller creators. It may feel like another hurdle, among what seem like a million others, that you have to jump over before YouTube can become a viable career path.
In an effort to remain optimistic in light of news like this, we think it’s important to use this as an opportunity to revisit why we do what we do on YouTube. Is it to become famous and make a million dollars? Or is it to make cool content that we love? Or is it a little bit of both? Whatever the case, it’s a perfect time to re-evaluate why we’re making content on YouTube in the first place.
